Terminology - National Croissant Day!

Copyright © Françoise Herrmann

Today is National Croissant Day in the USA!

Gone are the days of the plain butter croissant. This fluffy little pastry is on a creativity roll with chefs everywhere.  Here are three new hybrids:
  • The cronut:  hybrid doughnut- croissant, invented by Chef Dominique Ansel of Dominique Ansel Bakery in NYC.
  • The cruffin: hybrid muffin-croissant, invented by Mr. Holmes’ Bakehouse in San Francisco.
  • The tacro: hybrid taco-croissant, invented by Vive la Tarte in San Francisco, at The Ferry Building.
Add them to your list of classic, sweet and savory, variations, such as the chocolate croissant, the almond croissant,  croissant sandwiches,  stuffed croissants,  French toast croissants, croissants casseroles, and croissant custard pies.

If you are living in the Bay Area, here is a hyperlinked list of SFStation-recommended bakeries, plus more, where you might celebrate!
If you are living in NYC, it's not too late to celebrate at the following two SE (Serious Eats)-recommended bakery and gourmet shop!
