2022 European Inventor Awards: The Winners

The following inventors received trophies for their extraordinary inventions, during a dazzling virtual European Inventor Awards ceremony, held in Munich, Germany, this day.

Small and Medium Enterprises
Madiha Derouazi (CH), Elodie Belnoue (FR) and team
Invention: Therapeutic vaccine platform to treat several forms of cancer.

Research
Claude Grison (FR)
Invention: Decontaminating polluted soils with metal-eating plants.

Industry
Jaan Leis, Mati Arulepp and Anti Perkson (EE)

Invention: Superior carbon-based materials for ultracapacitors.

Non-EPO country
Donald Sadoway (CA/US)

Invention: Liquid metal batteries for storing renewable energy.

Popular Prize
Elena García Armada (ES)

Invention: First adaptable robotic exoskeleton for children.

Lifetime Achievement (disclosed during the ceremony)
Katalin Karikó (HU/USA), a Hungarian-American biochemist, who dedicated her life to messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) research, against many odds. Her invention relates to the modification of mRNA to prevent undesirable inflammatory responses, while still instructing cells to produce antigens that will create a desirable immune response, in mRNA-driven therapies. An invention that contributed significantly to the development of the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines. against the COVID-19 virus, among countless additional mRNA-driven therapies.

Young Inventor Prizes
The first, young inventors, to be recognized within the context of the European Patent Office Inventor Awards, were awarded cash prizes, graciously funded by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.

First place tie (20,000 Euros each team)
Victor Dewulf (BE) and Peter Hedley (UK)
Invention: AI-driven waste management.
Erin Smith (US)
Invention: AI bringing earlier care to new Parkinson’s patients.
Second Place (10,000 Euros)
Rafaella de Bona Gonçalves (BR)
Invention: Biodegradable pads and tampons to combat period poverty.



The 2023 European Inventor Awards will be held in Valencia, Spain. The process for nominating candidates for potential awards is open till October 3, 2022.
