EPO - Young Inventors Awards 2025 – Vote here!

The European Patent Office (EPO) Young Inventors Awards Ceremony will take place on June 18th, in Reykjavik, Iceland. All of the finalists, called Tomorrow Shapers, will receive a €5000 prize. Additionally, three €15,000 prizes will each be awarded to jury-selected young inventors, plus one €5000 People’s Choice prize.

The three additional €15,000 prizes are awarded for inventions addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular:

• The World Builders Prize to the young innovators who strive to promote circular economies, ensuring a better future for everyone. Their inventions typically fall within the scope of the SDGs 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 17.

• The Community Healers Prize to the young innovators who develop solutions to secure access to food, water, education, and jobs. Their inventions typically fall within the scope of the SDGs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10,16,17.

• The Nature Guardians Prize to the young innovators who strive to mitigate climate change and to protect ecosystems and the flora and fauna within. Their inventions typically fall within the scope of the SDGs 13, 14, 15, 17.

YOU are also invited to participate in the June 2025 Young Inventors Awards Ceremony, by voting for the People’s Choice winner. European Inventor Awards Popular Prize - Vote here!

The distinguished Jury of the European Patent Awards selected 15 finalists, among hundreds of nominations, in the five award categories of Research, Industry, Small & Medium Enterprises (SME), Non-European Patent Organization country, and Lifetime Achievement. However, one additional prize is awarded, during the Awards Ceremony, as a result of the popular vote.  Consequently, this is your chance to vote. The finalist who receives the most popular votes will be awarded  the sixth European Inventor trophy.

The Popular Vote electronic polling station is open for everyone to cast, not one, but many votes. According to the European Patent Office rules, you may vote as many times as you wish, but only once a day, for a single invention.  Therefore, dear Reader, you are invited to cast your ballot(s).

The EPO – European Patent Office, with offices in Munich, Berlin, Vienna, Brussels and a new main office building under construction in The Hague, Netherlands, is the executive branch of the European Patent Organization, under the supervision of an Administrative Council.  

The European Patent Organization is an intergovernmental organization, set up in 1977, according to the provisions of the European Patent Convention (EPC). Currently, 38 states are members of the European Patent Organization. Thus, that there are more European countries, members of the EPOrg, than there are countries members of the European Union.

Otherwise, between 1993 and 2009, extension agreements were also signed with various countries that are not members of the EPO, two of which are still in force (with BA - Bosnia and Herzegovina and ME Montenegro). Thus, the EPO grants EP patents with protection in up to 40 countries party to the EPC.

The EPOffice website operates in the three official languages of the EPO: English, French, and German, each accessible via a toggle drop down menu located in the upper-right corner of the site pages.  

Patent collections from all of the member states are stored in the EspaceNet database, which can be searched in each of the three official languages, and in each national language of the patent offices of the 40 countries party to the EPC.

EPO Oscars! The European Inventor Awards

This year, the awards ceremony will take place on May 28, in The Netherlands, the country which currently presides the European Union. On this date the EPO will select 5 winners, among 15 finalists, in 5 categories: Industry, Small & Medium-sized enterprises, Research, Non-European Patent Organization countries, and Life-time achievement. You can attend the Awards ceremony in 2015, if you register on time. The deadline for registering for the 2014 Awards ceremony was May 3, 2013. … But that might be a bit expensive anyhow, so you can also watch a broadcast of the Awards Ceremony event, in the convenience of your home, at the EPO website. In the interim, you can nominate inventors or inventions for the 2014 awards before Sept. 30, 2013, and join the 4000 EPO patent examiners, who are asked to send in nominations. You can also vote directly for your favorite inventor or inventions among the finalists, and be the Popular Vote, joining the EPO jury composed of distinguished experts in the fields of politics, business, media, science, academia and research – including Ernö Rubik, the inventor of the famous cube puzzle! Now that you are initiated to the world of patents, this is a great place and time to exercise your Patent Apprentice rights! There are few national boundaries in the world of patents as you know, so voting in Europe is a nice extension of your rights to universal suffrage! And if there were a Drop Box for suggestions perhaps that we could suggest a sixth category for Patents with humanitarian impact... and a seventh category for Young Inventors with the most promissing ideas that will revolutionize the world.... and an eighth category for the still under-represented feminine voices that will solve the world's most intractable problems....
